Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Apply from Iran or from Spain?

Two procedures, not two versions of the same form

A digital-nomad visa is handled through the competent Spanish consular authority. Spain also provides a residence-authorisation procedure for eligible international teleworkers who apply while lawfully present in Spain. The receiving authority, application form, procedural timetable and status granted are therefore different.

Do not choose a route only because a social-media post describes it as faster or longer. First verify lawful presence, the authority that can accept the application and whether the complete evidence set can be filed through that procedure.

Questions to resolve before choosing

• Where is the applicant lawfully resident or lawfully present on the intended filing date?
• Which authority is competent to receive the application?
• Can criminal-record, insurance, social-security and work evidence be completed in time?
• Will Iranian-issued public documents require translation and diplomatic legalisation for that authority?
• What status and validity period does the chosen procedure provide under the current rules?

When starting from Iran may be more coherent

A consular application may be the clearer path when the applicant is resident in Iran, is not already lawfully present in Spain, or needs to organise the move around a visa issued before travel. The current Tehran service instructions, appointment availability and treatment of Iranian records must be checked separately from the legal eligibility rules.

When an in-country assessment may be relevant

An in-country authorisation may be relevant to a person who is already lawfully present in Spain and otherwise satisfies the international-teleworker requirements. Lawful entry does not remove the need for a complete file, and an application strategy should not depend on overstaying or an assumed right to file.

Use a route-decision file

• Record the lawful-stay expiry date and proposed filing date
• List every document still requiring issue, translation or legalisation
• Map employee or freelancer evidence to the correct authority
• Confirm family-member and social-security treatment
• Preserve the official instructions used and their review date
